Connected Territories, Connected Solutions: Indigenous Leadership for Biodiversity and Mercury Action Across Hemispheres
October 23, 10:00 - 11:30
Indigenous Peoples are not only among those most affected by mercury pollution, but among the most determined and best positioned to lead the response. This side event brings together Indigenous leaders, institutional partners, and supportive governments to showcase Indigenous-led solutions and deepen the partnerships needed to scale them. Through the GEF's Inclusive Conservation Initiative (ICI) under GEF-7, FENAMAD has developed community-driven strategies in the Southwest Amazon that demonstrate what becomes possible when Indigenous Peoples lead their own solutions with direct access to resources. Drawing on this field experience, the event explores collective actions and how Indigenous-led solutions contribute simultaneously to implementation of the Minamata Convention and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
